The whale is not a FISH, but a MAMMAL.

A whale breathes with lung and has to come to surface to breathe by inhaling air through the blowhole. When it breathes out, compressed air is forced out the blowhole in a spray of air and water called a spume. Young whale are born alive. Whale swim by flukes move up and down. Whale have smooth skin.

LIFE CYCLE OF THE WHALE

A whale baby is called a calf, a mother is a cow and a father is a bull. Whales usually have one baby at one times. The whale calf is born under water with it eyes open and ready to swim. The calf must go to the surface as soon as it is in order to breathe. A whale calf grow very fast. The whale calf will stay with its mother until it is able to find its own food.

MIGRATION

Many whales migrate from their cold home to the warmer place to mate and give birth to their babies. This is a long journey. Its takes them about 3 months to travel each way.

TOOTHED AND BALEEN

Whale are divided into the way they catch their food. The two group are the baleen whale and toothed whale. Baleen whale have special plate that grows from their upper jaws. The baleen strains food out of the water. Plankton and krill are the main foods sources. Two examples of baleen whale are grey whale and humpback whale.

Toothed whale must chase and catch their food. Their foods usually fish, squid or shellfish. The teeth grips the food while the whale tears its prey apart. Sometimes toothed whales swallow thier food whole. Some examples toothed whale are sperm whale, killer whale bottlenose and narwhal.
